Twin explosions hit central Damascus just hours after French President Emmanuel Macron arrived in Syria on July 7. The blasts injured at least 18 people, including four police officers. Fortunately, Macron escaped unharmed because he had already left the area.

What Happened in Damascus?
Syria’s Interior Ministry said two improvised explosive devices (IEDs) caused the blasts. Attackers placed one device inside a parked car and hid the second inside a garbage container.
Bomb disposal teams discovered both devices before they exploded. However, the explosives detonated while officers prepared to dismantle them. As a result, 18 people suffered injuries, including four police officers.
Eyewitnesses reported a large cloud of smoke rising above the city center. Videos circulating on social media showed a burning vehicle, a damaged motorcycle, and blood-stained streets.
So far, no group has claimed responsibility for the attack.
Where Did the Explosions Occur?
The explosions occurred near the Four Seasons Hotel in central Damascus. One blast also struck close to the Ministry of Tourism.
The Four Seasons Hotel regularly hosts diplomats, journalists, and international aid workers. Macron stayed at the hotel overnight before meeting members of Syrian civil society on Tuesday morning.
Soon afterward, his convoy left for the presidential palace. Minutes later, the explosions rocked the nearby streets.

Was Emmanuel Macron the Target?
Officials have not answered this question.
A Damascus-based security source told Al Jazeera that investigators cannot yet determine whether the attackers targeted Macron’s motorcade. However, the source suggested that the attackers wanted to create instability and send a political message.
Meanwhile, the French presidency confirmed that Macron neither heard the explosions nor changed his schedule. He continued his meeting with President Ahmad al-Sharaa without interruption.
