Due to the downpour caused by the monsoon, Maharashtra has faced the deaths of 13 people in addition to school shutdowns in Mumbai for the second day in a row, and also disruption of road and rail services between Mumbai and Pune, among other things.

An orange alert has been declared for Mumbai, while a red alert has been given for Thane, Raigad, Nashik and Trimbakeshwar today (July 7) by the India Meteorological Department (IMD).

In the rain-related incidents, the death toll is declared as 13 in the state, as reported:

Rescue operations were launched at the sites, although there have been some hindrances in conducting recovery efforts owing to unabated rainfall in the Pune landslide region.

Schools, Colleges and Offices Closed

On July 7, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) declared closure of all government, private, and municipal schools and colleges in Mumbai because Monday’s Red Alert triggered the decision.

The Maharashtra State Disaster Management Authority has issued a work-from-home order for employees of various private companies and declared a half-day for all the non-essential government workers to minimise movement during the period of disturbance.

In case of emergencies, the helpline number of BMC is 1916.

Transport Hit Hard

Rail: A landslide in the Karjat-Lonavala ghat section has disrupted around 146 train services over the past two days. Restoration work is ongoing, but rail connectivity on this corridor remains limited.

Road: The Mumbai-Pune Expressway’s Missing Link tunnel was shut from 4 AM on Monday after nearly 100 tonnes of debris fell near the Tunnel 2 exit. Traffic resumed at 10:10 PM after safety inspections, but the situation remains under watch. The Mumbai-Ahmedabad highway is also facing waterlogging-related slowdowns.

Flights: Mumbai airport had suspended operations briefly on Sunday. Travellers should check with airlines before heading to the airport.

Rainfall Data: How Much Has Fallen

CM Fadnavis said the landslide at the Missing Link was “unprecedented” and that such an event had never occurred at the site before.

Safety Precautions: What Residents Should Do Right Now

Bottom Line

With the IMD forecasting continued heavy rain through July 8 and NDRF teams deployed across Maharashtra, the situation remains serious. Thirteen people are already dead. The advice from both state and central agencies is the same: stay home if you can, check before you travel, and keep emergency contacts accessible.
